Learn Spanish Guitar in Vienna
Established in 2001 by Jean-Pierre Antaki, the Academy of Spanish Guitar is dedicated to inspiring its students and teaching the skills to create beautiful and majestic music.
We teach worldwide via Zoom and Google Meet. It's a great way to learn and save time, with recitals online every four months. Our teachers are in Europe and Australia.
In 1969 Len Williams established the London Spanish Guitar Centre. His student, Peter Calvo, subsequently established the Sydney Spanish Guitar Centre. It was here that Jean-Pierre Antaki pursued his serious study of the guitar repertoire, teaching from 1980 to 1989 before establishing a successful international career. In 2001 Jean-Pierre returned to Australia and rebuilt the school under the name 'The Academy of Spanish Guitar'.
Vienna represents a Mecca for classical musicians and Jean-Pierre Antaki spent six fruitful years of his career here. As well as performing regularly in Vienna (notably an invitation to perform on the prestigious 'Jeunesse Musicale” Classical Guitar series at the Wiener Konzerthaus), Jean-Pierre has also performed in Rome, Florence, Venice, Brussels, and London.
Jean-Pierre’s personal mission in Vienna was to further the guitar’s reputation as a serious classical instrument by performing major works composed for the guitar, as well as popular transcriptions from the string and keyboard repertoire. The positive response he received from the public and from musical scholars has left Jean-Pierre with a feeling of great fondness and gratitude for Vienna.
The Academy of Spanish Guitar syllabus aims to take you from beginner level to as far as you want to go in the most direct way possible, with a repertoire from the late renaissance to the present day. Our teachers are experienced and passionate about their art and work. We teach beginners (of all ages) through to advanced players.
Most lessons are conducted by Zoom or Google Meet. Online teaching offers the flexibility for lessons anywhere, at convenient times. Lessons are personal and effective, and our students have the opportunity to perform in a relaxed and supportive environment at our quarterly Student Recitals.
Tuition
We have experienced teachers in Europe and Australia who can build your skills from any level. Our tuition is personal and mostly online.
Concerts
The Academy organises regular concerts featuring our teachers and students. Subscribe to our mailing list and we'll keep you informed.
Zoom or Google Meet
We offer lessons by Zoom or Google Meet ... so it doesn't matter where you are! Online lessons are surprisingly personal and effective.
Beginners
The first part of the syllabus was originally compiled by Len Williams for his students at the London Spanish Guitar Centre (including his son, John Williams). It consists of well-graded and musically attractive guitar pieces, with some essential technical material.
Intermediates
When students are ready for the next phase, they are taken through some of the more challenging and iconic works of the guitar repertoire which develop their technique and musicianship to a higher level.
Advanced
If students demonstrate exceptional ability, they are encouraged to progress to this phase. Here they will learn the pinnacles of the guitar repertoire, spanning centuries from the early Renaissance through to major compositions of recent years.
Jean-Pierre is a wonderful teacher who has introduced me to a vast world of classical and traditional music. Before starting lessons with Jean-Pierre I could play just a few chords and now I'm playing concert level repertoire, performing regularly, understanding advanced musical concepts and challenging myself in a supportive and comfortable environment. Studying guitar online is flexible and means my lessons fit effortlessly with my full-time job.
